Regents plan trip to People’s Republic by October

SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, Aug. 19, 2011) – Northern Marianas College intends to develop a relationship with community colleges in China for student recruitment purposes.

By October, NMC President Sharon Hart said an executive team, which includes the board of regents, is scheduled to go on a special trip to China.

“It may be nice if we may take a look at those opportunities,” Hart told the board during its Wednesday meeting as she encouraged the participation of all regents in professional development training sessions.

She noted China’s proximity to the CNMI and NMC’s “reasonable” tuition fees.

NMC, she said, can establish a partnership with colleges in China.

Before the submission of NMC’s accreditation report on Oct. 15, board members are also encouraged to attend the Association of Community College Trustees training session.

By spring next year, Hart said they can also attend the American Association for Community College convention.

Hart urged each board member to avail of professional development training at least once a year.

Board Chairman Juan T. Lizama said sufficient training for the regents is one of the requirements of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

“That’s what they want us to do so we have to show to them that we are here to do the best we could for the good for the college,” he said.

Lizama said regents attending training and other professional development programs should relay the information they learned to the board.

During the meeting, Regent Elaine Orilla reported about the boardmanship training which discusses, among other things, the policy development for boards, institutional autonomy, the distinction between government and management, the relationship of the board chairman and chief executive officer, and responsibility of the chairman.

She said a request for proposal for a consultant who can conduct boardmanship training has been reviewed and approved.
