Maritime training planned

The College of the Marshall Islands is working to establish a Maritime Vocational Training Center to be based at its Arrak Campus near Laura. “This is a nice step in the right direction, but we still have quite a ways to go yet,” said CMI’s Acting President Carl Hacker (pictured). “But this should be a good catalyst.” Hacker estimates the cost for the first year of operating a maritime vocational program at $220,000.

CMI is aiming to start its first training cycle in March next year. “The goal of CMI’s Maritime Vocational Training Center is to get our Marshallese trainees into maritime labor markets, such as RMI flagged vessels and US flagged vessels,” Hacker said. CMI is planning an intensive, ten-week training program, “boot camp style.”
