Public schools will not be opening on Tuesday but one week later.

Guam Department of Education officials, in a press release, said Public Health officials “determined the current conditions are not acceptable to open the cafeterias.”

Sodexo, the school system’s new food services contractor, is working with Guam DOE to improve conditions.

The new school year will start Aug. 15 for all schools, the release stated. The only exception is John F. Kennedy High School, which will begin the new school year Aug. 16.

“With the new contract we want to ensure that all standards are met because we want to protect all students,” Interim Superintedent of Education Taling Taitano said.

“Unfortuneately, this means DOE and the new contractor have to do more work to meet these standards. But when it comes to the safety and health of students, no investment is too great and we certainly can’t rush this.”

The release also notes that the department is asking parents “for their patience and apologizes for the push back.”
