Palau earns satisfying ratings from IDEA on Special Education

Special Report – Koror, Palau, Micronesia (Oceania Television Network, July 22, 2011)

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA is a service to children with disabilities throughout the United States, its territories, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau. IDEA governs all the states and countries and provides early intervention, special education and related services to more than 6.5 million eligible people under the age of 21 with disabilities.

In a recent evaluation of the 2009 to 2010 school year, only twenty-eight U.S. states and Palau met the requirements of IDEA. The Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, CNMI and Guam all rated one step lower as places that need assistance. IDEA also requires each state or country to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities from birth through age 21 who are in need of early intervention or special education services. Puerto Rico, Utah, Illinois and the District of Columbia received the lowest ratings and have been determined as states that need intervention.
