UOG Western Pacific Coral Reef Institute Scholarships Available

The Western Pacific Coral Reef Institute (WPCRI) scholarships are available to resident students of Micronesia (Guam, CNMI, RMI, Palau, and FSM) studying biology or environmental science at the University of Guam. WPCRI anticipates funding three awards in the amount of $4,288 for undergraduates and $5,376 for graduates to cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books for full time attendance during the Fall Semester 2011. The application can be downloaded from www.uog.edu/wpcri. The deadline to apply is August 12, 2011 at 5 p.m. Applications must be submitted to the UOG Financial Aid Office located in the Field House.

This scholarship opportunity supports the overall mission of WPCRI, which is to build capacity for the better management of coral reefs in the region.  The institute fosters collaboration between researchers, managers and stakeholders throughout the Micronesian region in addressing the documented losses of coral reefs and related resources in the Pacific Islands and worldwide.  Students studying under this program will be given the opportunity to participate in ongoing coral reef management activities.

This program is part of a cooperative agreement between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research and the University of Guam to build regional capacity in the natural sciences field of study related to protecting and preserving Micronesia’s coral reefs.

WPCRI is under the purview of the UOG Center for Island Sustainability and is guided by a Management Committee involving representatives from the University of Guam, and government, academic, and non-government institutions from Guam and the Micronesian region.  For more information on WPCRI, visit our website at www.uog.edu/wpcri or contact Edwin Reyes, WPCRI Program Manager, at (671) 735-2173 or via email at edwinreyes@uguam.uog.edu
